New Delhi / Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan — 11 August 2025
In a major financial relief for farmers, the Union government has transferred ₹3,900 crore in crop insurance claims to the bank accounts of 35 lakh farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) (PMFBY Official X).
The virtual disbursal event was led by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, with Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma in attendance (PTI).
Breakdown of Payments
According to official statements, a total of ₹3,200 crore was disbursed to over 30 lakh farmers across several states (Mathrubhumi):
- Madhya Pradesh: ₹1,156 crore
- Rajasthan: ₹1,121 crore
- Chhattisgarh: ₹150 crore
- Other States: ₹773 crore
The higher figure of ₹3,900 crore and 35 lakh farmers comes directly from the official PMFBY X account, indicating possible inclusion of additional states or claims cleared on the same day.
Faster Settlement & Penalty Clause
The government has introduced a simplified settlement process — claims will now be processed based solely on the central government’s subsidy share without waiting for the state government’s contribution.
To prevent delays, a 12% penalty will be imposed on state governments or insurance companies if they fail to release their share on time (Mathrubhumi).
PMFBY: Impact Since 2016
Launched in 2016, PMFBY has so far disbursed ₹1.83 lakh crore in insurance claims to farmers against premiums of ₹35,864 crore paid by them — nearly five times their contribution (PIB).
Key scheme statistics:
- 22.66 crore farmer applications have received payouts since inception.
- Enrolment has risen from 3.17 crore in 2022–23 to 4.19 crore in 2024–25.
- Claims cover crop losses due to natural calamities like drought, flood, or unseasonal rain.
How Farmers Can Check Their Claim Status
Farmers can verify their credited claims by:
- Visiting the PMFBY official website.
- Entering registration details under the “Application Status” section.
- Using the PMFBY mobile app or helpline numbers for assistance (Livemint Hindi).
Looking Ahead
Minister Chouhan reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening crop insurance coverage, ensuring timely payouts and greater transparency. The new rules, combined with increased enrolment, aim to give farmers a stronger safety net against climate and market risks.
For millions of farmers, especially in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, this transfer is expected to provide immediate liquidity ahead of the next sowing season.
